Tastemaker's Tag Sale Part 2

Mark your calendars! Another tag sale, brought to you by former Domino editors Tom Delevan, Dara Copinigro, Chase Booth and Tori Mellot, is coming next Saturday, June 13...and this time they're setting up shop in the Hamptons! Unless you were living under a rock, you probably heard about the last tag sale held here in New York City a few weeks ago at Delevan's West Village apartment. It was a huge hit. In fact, so many people showed up the line stretched down the block and around 5th Avenue! This time there will be a few new additions to the tastemaker's club selling their goods including Christiane Lemieux, founder and owner of Dwell Studio (who's unloading an entire storeage unit!), fashion PR maven Jennifer Carlston and photographer Matt Albiani. Expect a truckload of new, used and antique items which include furniture home accessories, designer and vintage clothing and to-the-trade fabric yardage. The sale is cash only and judging from the line at the last sale, savvy shoppers should show up early!

Design on a Dime Stories

Before last week's Design on a Dime benefit I had an opportunity to chat with a few of the designers as they were setting up their vignettes and I also caught up with a few more designers at the opening reception. It was fun hearing about their inspiration, the resources they used in their designs and especially the creative stories they came up with to help guide their design process.

Calypso Home's vignette probably had one of my favorite back stories. This room belongs to a young woman who just had her heart broken by her boyfriend. The space has a youthful aesthetic but it looks very disheveled because its owner has been holed up in her room feeling sorry for herself and mourning the end of her relationship.

The crumpled up facial tissues strewn about the room are evidence that the young woman has been crying quite a bit. And the empty wine and champagne bottles seen on the floor reveal that she has also been attempting to drink away her sorrows! All of the products seen here are from Calypso Home. Draped over the giraffe printed chair is Calypso's pom pom blanket which I love and have blogged about before.

Designer David Cafiero's vignette, shown above, was another favorite of mine. His space is actually a psychiatrist's office. When I asked him where he found his inspiration he joked, "I've been watching In Treatment a lot!" He then explained that his vignette was actually inspired by his childhood shrink's office which ironically was located in a home once owned by his grandfather. The space had green walls, grasscloths accents and a fireplace which were elements David used as a starting point for his design plan. The key pieces in the room, the Danish Chaise and the two cuban deco chairs came from an acutal psychiatrist's office. He recovered the chaise in a buttery yellow linen and left the chairs as is. The wingback chair was from an estate in Westchester, the lamp was a flea market find, the rug was from a client's house and the fireplace surround was a street find which he painted black. The frame for the mirror above the mantle was a flea market find and the mirror itself was belonged to Chloe Sevigny, one of his most notable clients. It was too large for it's intended purpose so David cut it down to fit the frame and then used the other half as a top for the coffee table that you see in the photo on the far left. I love that David really stayed true to his inpiration, even sourcing peices from an actual shrink's office! I enyoyed chatting with him and have become a fan of his eclectic style. He's definitely on my designer to watch list. Look for a profile on David coming soon! 

Designer Laura Bohn created this stylish men's dressing room. He seems to be a bit of a prepster as evidenced by the pink dress shirts hanging in the closet. He also has a sexy girlfriend who often sleeps over and leaves some of her raciest lingirie hanging in his closet as a reminder of her. You can't see it in the photo but on the end of the closet opposite his shirts hangs an assortment of her hot pink and leopard printed lingirie! The closet in the space is from California Closets, the daybed is from Resource Furniture, the round ottoman is from Classic Sofa, the lamps are from Holly Hunt and Ralph Lauren Home, the wallpaper from Wolf Gordon, the vanity is from ducduc, and the rug from Patterson Flynn and Martin.

I didn't have an opportunity to talk with Charlotte Moss but this is her chic gardening shack, which I thought was amazing. In an interview for Housing Works, Moss discusses her inspiration for the space which was a cartoon from a March 1946 edition of the New Yorker. 

Moss exlains, "It’s got a woman standing in her garden in the winter; and she’s standing there in a pant suit with her mink coat over her shoulders, and with seed packets in her hand. She’s thinking, 'What the hell do I do now?' And I thought, My Design on a Dime room is going to be a chic gardening shack and she’s going to be my star."

"It’s going to have a potting table, a hall tree, gardening books and implements, and hats and pots. And there will be silk panels on the wall with art hung over it—that’s the chic part." I absolutely loved this room...there were so many interesting visual elements but my favorite the fur coat that was hanging inside space. You can see it in the top photo on the far right. The coat once belonged to Helen Gurley Brown, the most ifnluential editor-in-chief in Cosmopolitan magazine's history. She was also a major player in the women's feminist movement in the 60s. The coat even had her monogram inside! My friend Samantha tried it on and in the 60 seconds she wore it, at least 5 people came up to her and told her how fabulous it was!

I'm sorry that I can't recall who designed this room....but I absolutely LOVED it! A not-so-subtle nod to our inspirational Commander in Chief!

John Robshaw Sample Sale

If you're in New York you should definitely check out John Robshaw's sample sale which starts tomorrow. I attended the last one and scored some beautiful napkins and tablecloths for my place. They also had lots of Robshaw's beautiful, ethnic inspired bedding for sale and the prices were really good. Sadly, I'm out of town and will miss this one so if you attend, please report back on how it was!

For this annual fundraiser, Housing Works enlists some of the top names in interior design to create spectacular room vignettes with donated, brand new luxury home furnishings which are then sold at 50-80% off retail to benefit Housing Works' charitable programs for homeless and low-income people living with HIV and AIDS in New York City. The site JUST launched yesterday so you can be among the first to join! Today's sales feature Dwell Studio and Serena & Lily. Upcoming sales this week include Lunt Silversmiths, Chelsea Textiles and Ann Gish, one of my absolute favorite lines of bedding and table linens!

One Kings Lane is the brainchild of two decor obsessed women, Susan Feldman and Alison Gelb Pincus. Feldman and Pincus are former New Yorkers who moved to LA and soon missed being able to attend designer sample sales which were abundant in New York. Realizing there was a void in the market, the two combined their expertise in retail and digital media with their love for home decor and design and founded One Kings Lane which is the first-ever online sample sale devoted to home. All I can say is thank you ladies for such a fabulous idea! (Although I may take that back once I start shopping up a storm and get my credit card bills!) Congrats ladies on a successful venture! A Peek Inside Dining by Design 2009

This past weekend I was so excited to check out the displays at Dining by Design. It was my first year attending and was blown away with all of the creativity on display. If you're not familiar, Dining by Design is an annual fundraising event for DIFFA, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. Each year, talented designers in various cities collaborate with sponsors to create amazing dining installations that are put on display and proceeds from the events benefit DIFFA's AIDS awareness, prevention and treatment programs. The photo above shows what was probably the most elaborate tablescape on display. Designed by Michael Tavano, the theme of this vignette was "Fine Dining, Urban Living." The juxtaposition of the edgy graffiti backdrop combined with the fine china and crystal chandelier is quite striking.

Here's a closer look at the table setting. The giant chandelier is by Schonbeck, the china and napkins are from Lovegrove & Repucci, the silverware is by Christolfe, the glassware is by Orrefors and I love the chairs which are from Baker.

This next table was by Ralph Lauren Home. I wish I had a better photo but I loved the teak table and display beneath the gauzy striped tent. The setting screams chic safari lodge dinner party.

 

This dining installation is by Brad Ford. The theme here is "Change is Good" and the idea is that a little extra change in your pocket could be donated to DIFFA. (I also think he may have been making a subtle political statement as well).

 

It's hard to see in the photo but the table was designed with slots to drop your change into and you can see all of the change beneath the table's lucite top. I also think Brad was making a subtle political statement as well. In keeping with the theme are various piggybanks which are arranged as the table's centerpiece. I loved this table and the concept was extraordinarily creative.

The china here is from Michael C. Fina and the tablescape features the infamous Jeff Koons puppy vase.

Kravet's table had a fun spring garden party theme!

I love, love, loved fashion designer Tracy Reese's table! Her design had a pink fairy-tale like feeling and was complete with flirty floral dresses from her collection draped over each chair...a clever touch. I especially loved the pretty china she chose. Below is a closer look.

It was really a lot of fun seeing all of the beautiful tablescapes at the event. Each one was so unique and there was so much creativity and thought put into them. I wish I could have taken photos of every table to share with you but I would have been there all day! I'll leave you with a peek at a few more of my favorite tables from the event and hopefully you can check out Dining by Design in your area very soon! Fine Art at The Winter Antiques Show

Last Sunday I visited the annual Winter Antiques Show on its final day. There were so many things to see but I was especially drawn to several of the oil on canvas works that were on display. Below are photos of the paintings I thought were particularly beautiful. I wish I could have taken one of them home! Sadly, I have fine art taste on a flea market budget! Enjoy the photos!

This beautiful girl caught my eye. She was a Burmese dancer who was "bored to tears" and decided to sit for English painter Sir Gerald Kelly after much persuasion. The work is titled "Portrait of Sao Ohn Nyunt"  and is from the Martyn Gregory gallery in London. Circa 1931. Est $152,000

"Phoebe Maynor" is the title of this painting by American artist Barnard Lintott. I wished I could have learned more about the woman in the painting who I found so intriguing. From Taylor B. Williams antiques in Harbert, Michigan. Circa 1910. Est $48,000

"Turkish Water Seller" by American painter Francis Davis Millet. Another intriguing subject and I loved all of the painting's rich, dark colors. Millet was one of the few American painters who mastered Orientalism. An interesting fact about Millet is that he died in the Titanic. Available at the John Alexander LTD gallery in Philadelphia. Circa 1874 Est $495,00.

"The Balloon Vendor" by Edward Potthast.. This American impressionist painter was based in New York and was best known for his paintings of idyllic, sunny beach scenes. Potthast's works are extremely valuable investment pieces. This one can be yours for a cool $3,500,000 via the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York. Circa 1910.

This work is also from the Gerald Peters Gallery. It's titled "Harlem Flats" by Canadian-born American impressionist painter Ernest Lawson who was best known for painting landscapes, particularly scenes of upper Manhattan neighborhoods such as Harlem and Inwood. I loved this painting because its a historical representation of Harlem...the neighborhood where I now live. You may have to click the photo to see details but it depicts a colorful scene of laundry hanging from the old tenement buildings. Est $450,000. Circa 1907.

Foster Gwin antiques was one of the last booths I stopped by. Interesting tidbit...the actor Matt Dillon was there talking with one of the owners while I was there! Anyway- I was wowed by this giant, contemporary abstract oil on canvas painting and its juxtaposition with the beautiful 17th century European furniture pieces also on display. The work is by American born painter Edward Dugmore and was completed in 1956. I don't recall what the estimate was but given the notoriety of the artist combined with the grand scale of the piece, I can only imagine what it must cost. As soon as I saw the piece I had this déjá vu feeling that I'd seen it before...and I swore it was in an old issue of Elle Décor.

So being the magazine hoarder that I am I went digging through old issues and lo and behold I found it! A clip from the July '07 issue shows the painting hanging in the Malibu beach house of a Hollywood power couple decorated by Madeline Stuart. I love it when I'm right!

Antiques at the Armory

_{The 69th Regiment Armory, Lexington Avenue @ 26th Street, Downtown New York City}

Last weekend I headed downtown to check out the annual Antiques at the Armory show. Not to be confused with the Winter Antiques Show which is held uptown at the Park Ave Armory, this show is held downtown at the Armory on Lexington and is much smaller than the other show, with only about 100 vendors exhibiting. Still, it didn't disappoint with beautiful American and European furniture, art and collectibles on display along with lots of of inspiration. Below are a few photos of some of the vignettes and individual pieces that caught my eye. 

I loved this little vignette with the plush forest green velvet bergere chair...

This vignette was from the same vendor, Margaret Doyle Antiques. The modern looking cowhide covered chair next to that beautiful marble top chest is such a lovely contrast.

One of my passions is cooking and I'm obsessed with cookware so when I saw all of these gorgeous antique copper pots and pans my jaw dropped. These were from Eve Stone Antiques out of Connecticut. Most of these pieces are from the 18th and 19th century and are in pristine condition. Absolutely beautiful!

I also loved this Chinese Chippendale style china cabinet from Jeffrey Beal Heknel Antiques and Design.

Drucker Antiques had some beautiful antique jewelry from Tiffany, Cartier and more on display...

Recently become interested in vintage and antique silver serveware and this early 1920s Georg Jensen tea set, also from the Drucker Antiques booth, caught my eye...

I LOVE this faux bamboo armchair from Brennan & Mouilleseaux...it was one of the few pieces I could actually afford. One might assume this is painted mahogany or some other wood but it's actually made of cast aluminum painted a soft bronze color. And my photo came out a little bright so it's hard to tell but the seat is uhpolstered in a beautiful ecru colored fabric with cream vine embroidery. I considered making the impulsive slpurge for a second, then practicality set in and reminded me that I have no place to put the thing...plus I should be saving, not spending in these tough economic times. Sigh. Maybe one day me and the beautiful chair will cross paths again!

This interesting contemporary diptych also caught my eye. The pieces are made of vintage comic book pages with various brush strokes and the words "blood king" painted over them in white and scarlet red. A little dark for my personal taste but very intriguing and I think these would look beautiful in the right space.

Last but not least, I thought this set of Italian dining chairs was amazing. Sadly, I can't remember the vendor that was selling them but I'm pretty sure they were based in the Hamptons somewhere. Winter Antiques Show and a So Haute Reader Giveaway!

My Super Saturday

Super Saturday was HOT....literally. It was a gazillion degrees outside and there was hardly any shelter from the sun. Still, it was a fun day and the heat didn't stop me from shopping up storm to help raise money for a really great cause. Aside from many incredible fashion finds, there were lots of great products for the home available at Super Saturday too. Here's a little peek at some of the many items that could be had for a song at this year's event:

I was dying for the new Dyson Animal hand vacuum which was marked down to just $90 (originally $199)! Sadly, every single vacuum cleaner at the booth including the display models were sold in the first 30 minutes of the event! And I thought all the frenzy would be over Rachel Zoe's booth!

Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe's had a booth with lots of incredible clothes and accessories that were donated by Rachel herself as well as by many of her celebrity friends and clients. Above is a photo of a shopper perusing the racks. There were lots of amazing things... Temperley dresses, gorgeous Valentino gowns and quite a few pairs of Guiseppe Zanotti shoes.

There were also plenty of bags from Rachel Zoe's exclusive Judith Leiber handbag collection for sale. The funny thing is that I was expecting her booth to be a mad house but it wasn't nearly as crazy as I expected...it was actually quite civilized!

Cottages and Gardens Publications also had a booth...as you can see there were lots of chevron printed floor cushions for sale as well as a great selection of throw pillows, design books, dishware and other stylish accessories for the home.

I was excited to dicover that Dwell Studio was at Super Saturday this year. They had current season sheet sets and duvet covers for more than half off...and the prices were marked down even further as the day progressed...

Dwell Studio also had an interactive theater tent for kids...very cute!

I also stopped at the booth of Madewell, the new line by J. Crew. They had quite a colorful array of jeans on display...

One of my favorite booths at the event was Smythson of Bond Street. There I picked up a beautiful ivory colored French wallet in croc printed leather as well as a red leather key fob and an aqua colored business card holder...all at prices far below retail!

I know my mom would have loved this booth. St. John, whose prices are astronomical at retail, had pieces available at serious markdowns. Their jackets which normally range between $1-2000 were on sale at Super Saturday for $595! Still expensive but a great deal compared to what they usually cost!

There was also an amazing raffle with prizes like this Chanel bag which I would have loved to win!

Here's another great raffle prize. Gucci Python...what more can I say?!

At the end of the day I left with my goodies from Smythson, a few great dresses from Diane von Furstenberg, Twinkle and Sunner, a pair of Spanx and some really cute swimsuits from Victoria's Secret. Super Saturday did not disappoint!

{Haute News} A Metropolitan Home Showhouse Collaboration Coming Soon...

Metropolitan Home and Showtime will be partnering this Fall on a designer show house! For the month of September, a $20 million, 8,800 square foot Greek Revival townhouse in New York's Grammercy Park will be transformed into a chic modernist dwelling with interiors that evoke the spirit of the cable channel's hit shows such as Californication, The Tudors, The L Word and Weeds. The show house will feature interiors by some of the top names in the industry including Vicente Wolf, Jamie Drake, Tori Golub, Laura Kirar, White Webb and Amy Lau who are all said to be on board for the project. Lots of top tier talent so I'm sure it will be amazing. I hear that the house will also be available for private events.

I have to say, Weeds is one of my favorite shows. Does anyone else watch it? Only Weeds insiders will get this but I was thinking it would be funny if the stolen cross from Majestic made an appearance in one of the rooms. Hehe! Anyway--I think this collaboration provides a unique and clever cross promotional marketing opportunity for both brands and I can't wait to see what's in store! As soon as I have more details I will be sure to give you an update!

Architectural Digest Home Design Show

This weekend I plan to stop by the Architectural Digest Home Design Show. Any one else going? Even though the magazine isn't exactly my favorite I've gone to the show for the past few years and have enjoyed it. If I see anything that really stands out I'll post about it later!
